Archives of absence, archives of presence, installation in 3 parts and artist publications, 2018 / 2019

Archives of absence, archives of presence is an ode to the concept of Consilience. Consilience is a unitary concept by British philosopher and historian of science William Whewell and literally means ‘jumping together’ of knowledge. In our approach, we see a reappreciation of this concept and of the underlying idea of dissolving the boundaries between sciences, replacing them with shifting hybrid fields. In three phases, we examine the relationship between two types of samples found in the winter of 2017-2018 on the Holtingerveld in Drenthe. Together, these two separate collections give a picture of what is and was present in this area in different timelines. Through biological, geological and etymological dissections, new insights are generated, reunited and made visible.
